Travel & TransportationUseful information about Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa of 274,000 km² with an approximate population of 13 million. The inhabitants of Burkina Faso are called Burkinabè. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the south east, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d'Ivoire to the south west. Geography Relatively flat country, made up of two major types of countryside. The larger part of the country is covered by a peneplain, which forms a gently undulating landscape with few isolated hills (the last vestiges of a Precambrian massif). The southwest of the country, forms a sandstone massif, with the highest peak, Ténakourou, at an elevation of 749 meters (2,450 feet). The massif is bordered by sheer cliffs up to 150 meters (490 ft) high. The average altitude is 400 meters (1,300 ft). Climate Tropical climate with two very distinct seasons; rainy season with 600 and 900 millimeters (24–35 inches) rainfall (May/June to September) and; dry season (harmattan) with hot dry wind from the Sahara. Three climatic zones can be defined: the Sahel, the Sudan-Sahel, and the Sudan-Guinea. The Sahel in the north receives less than 600 millimeters (24 inches) of rainfall per year and has high temperatures, 5–47°C (40 –115 °F). |
